Bei einer Verringerung der Luftzufuhr steigt der Wasserstand im Abschäumer an. Dies kann im Extremfall dazu führen, daß der Abschäumer „überkocht“ und daß das Wasser so hochsteigt, dass es in den Schaumtopf gedrückt wird und der Dreck wieder in das Aquarium gespült wird. Dies kann zu einer extremen Belastung des Wassers führen. Durch den Notüberlauf wird verhindert, dass das Wasser über ein bestimmtes Niveau steigt und es zu einem Überkochen kommen kann.   Notüberlaufrohr & Reglerrohr   Am Notüberlaufrohr kann der Wasserstand im Abschäumer abgelesen werden. Zudem helfen Minimum und Maximum Markierungen bei der optimalen Einstellung des Wasserstands.
